Philosophy
At Thistle & Amber, space is understood as more than a backdrop to daily life. The environments we inhabit influence how we move, rest, connect, work, and care for ourselves and others.
Whether in a home, apartment, small business, or property preparing for its next chapter, thoughtfully designed spaces can bring greater clarity, comfort, and ease to everyday life. When a space is aligned with the people who inhabit it, it fosters a sense of belonging and becomes an active source of support and well-being.
Guiding Principles
Attention is foundational.
Attention is the foundation of care in design and leads to meaningful decisions.
Every space has a story.
The most meaningful design begins by understanding the people who inhabit a space, how they live, and what they hope to cultivate there.
Beauty belongs to everyone.
Thoughtful spaces are not defined by size, budget, or perfection; modest homes and businesses deserve beauty, dignity, and care.
Design should support real life.
A well-designed space makes everyday living easier. It reduces friction, supports daily routines, and reflects the people who use it.
Begin with curiosity.
Every project is approached without assumptions. Sometimes a space needs thoughtful editing; other times it calls for a more complete transformation. The response is always guided by the needs of the space and the people it serves.
Thoughtfully tended spaces care for us in return.
When a space supports the life unfolding within it, it becomes more than functional. It becomes restorative, welcoming, and deeply personal.
In Practice
I often refer to my work as space therapy—a thoughtful, human-centered approach to design, focused on the ways spaces are experienced. The work is rooted in the understanding that our environments shape how we feel, function, and move through daily life, and it considers not only how a space looks, but also how it more fully supports the people who inhabit it.
Every project begins with attentive observation and deep listening—to the space itself and to the people who live, work, or gather there. Before making changes, I seek to understand how a space is being used, where it supports daily life, and where it creates unnecessary friction.
My work blends the practical principles of design with a sensitivity to the subtler qualities of a space—atmosphere, flow, and energy…and how it is experienced in the body. Layout, circulation, light, scale, proportion, furnishings, materials, and organization all influence how a space functions. These tangible elements work together with less visible factors that shape how a space is experienced: whether it feels welcoming or overwhelming, focused or scattered, restorative or depleting, alive with energy or in need of reset.
This work translates across homes, apartments, real estate, small business environments, and more—wherever people are shaping spaces to better support daily life.
Some projects call for simple adjustments while others invite a more complete transformation. The approach is never predetermined. Together, we discover what will best support the life unfolding within the space, balancing beauty, functionality, and the realities of budget, time, and circumstance.
The goal is not to create an outwardly perfect space, but rather to create a space that is experienced as being intentional, supportive, and deeply aligned with the people who live, work, or gather there.
