THE KENSINGTON
Winona, Minnesota
Once a grand hotel, The Kensington remains an important part of downtown Winona's history. When the owners began planning improvements to the building—which now provides housing for older adults and space for local businesses—they were seeking a clearer vision for the next chapter of the property.
I invited designer Gina Henderson of House on Seventh to collaborate, and together we explored the building's architectural history, original character, and future potential. Through research, planning, and thoughtful material selections, we developed recommendations for refreshed flooring, carpeting, and finishes throughout the atrium, elevator landings, and common hallways.
The changes were not dramatic, but they were meaningful. Cleaner lines, brighter surfaces, and a more cohesive palette helped restore dignity and warmth to shared spaces used every day by residents and visitors. I appreciate projects like this because they demonstrate how thoughtful improvements can honor the past while supporting the people who call a place home today.
